Objectives:
Discuss factors involved in early childhood fluorosis and dental caries.
Discuss determinants of bone density in children.
Learn about nutrition research practices within the College of Dentistry.

2. Practice using the new DRI probability approach to evaluate adequacy of dietary intake.
3. Describe uses of the food label for patient education.

Nutritional Diagnosis was introduced at the American Dietetic
Association Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) last October
(2005). As one of Iowas delegates, Jan received ADA training
on
the concepts from ADA.

Program Title: "Achieving Glycemic Control for the Hospitalized Patient."
Program schedule:

Presentor: Mary Starry, RPh. with the Crawford Diabetes Education Center (CDEC) at Mercy Medical Center
Mary has been with the CDEC since 1989 and has a vast knowledge about diabetes and its treatment. She will be discussing the rational for inproved glycemic control in the hospitalized patient, the physiological approach to insulin therapy, and review a process used at Mercy in which intense glycemic control was initiated using basal and bolus insulin based on blood glucose levels and carbohydrate intake.
One hour of CPEU credit from CDR has been requested.

A tour of the Crawford Center which will be next door to the meeting will be available either before or after the meeting.
Directions. Mercy is located on 8th Avenue between 8th and 10th Streets. It will probably be easiest to park in the Parking Ramp (free) that can be reached most easily from the 8th Avenue and 8th Street corner. Enter the hospital on the south end of the ramp and go to the ground floor. The meeting will be in the Katz Cardiovascular Conference room located just around the corner from the south entrance of the parking ramp. Signs will be posted.
If coming from Iowa City or near by communities, take I-380 north to the Diagonal Drive exit and at the first light (right off the exit) turn right and continue to follow this street. Diagonal Drive soon becomes 8th Avenue. After crossing the river, 8th Street will be 8 blocks and Mercy will be on the left (big building--hard to miss) turn left on 8th Street and immediately (one half of a very short block) turn right into the parking ramp drive way.

Program Objectives:
The learner will be able to:
1. Describe the Obesity Prevention Task Force initiative
2 Be aware of dietitians possible participation with the obesity Prevention Task Force.
3. Understand the changes in the federal guidance impacting school nutrition programs as a result of the
July 2004 Farm Bill
4. Be aware how dietitians can participate in formation of school district Wellness Policies in their
communities

6. Discuss referral process for the Center for Fit Families.

Program Objectives:
The learner will be able to:
1. Identify clinical symptoms to monitor when conducting nutrition assessments on post-bariatric surgery patients.
2 Be aware of nutritional and fluid needs following bariatric surgery.
3. Participants will be able to describe how the human body in acute and chronic stressful situations seeks balance by turning-on the drive to eat.
4. Participants will be able to describe developmental skills from the Solution Method that can turn-off the drive to over-eat.

2. The neurobiology of eating during and after acute and chronic stress.
